Public meeting in windfarm campaign

Campaigners fighting plans for a windfarm in Darrington will hold a public meeting on Tuesday.

Members of Pontefract Windfarm Action Group (PWAG) and local councillors will meet at Darrington Golf Club to discuss The Banks Group’s proposal to build a 60 metre high wind monitoring mast for up to three years at Westfield Lane.

Members of Wakefield Council’s planning committee unanimously rejected the plan in July on the grounds that it was an “inappropriate development in green belt” – but the developers are appealing the decision with the Planning Inspectorate.

Sylvia White, secretary of the group, said: “The steering committee of the PWAG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of district.

“Behind the scenes leaflets, letters, meetings with the council’s planning department and exhibitions have been organised to raise awareness of the impact visual, financial and health issues of these plans.

“Without the public support – sending letters of objection, speaking to councillors and not forgetting financial support – the PWAG would not be able to move forward and we would like to thank everyone.

“However, we are now at a stage where we would like to update all those who have a vested interest in opposing the monster turbines.”

Residents had until October 22 to send submissions to the Inspectorate, and are awaiting its decision.

A statement from Banks on the original planning report said:

“The data from the proposed 60m mast is a very important part of evaluating the renewable energy potential of the site.”

The public meeting will be held at Darrington Golf Club at 7.30pm on Tuesday November 27.
