Wind farms or tax farms?

Some of you might wonder about the level of the federal tax subsidies Public Service Co. of Oklahoma and other wind developers will receive for the Wind Catcher Wind Farm (“PSO seeks quick approval for wind farm,” Aug. 1)
The taxpayer subsidy to PSO for Wind Catcher will total about $200 million per year. That’s $5 billion over the 25-year life of the project, 125 percent of the total cost of ($4 billion) of the project. (You can arrive at this number by multiplying the power to be generated annually in kilowatt hours by the tax credit of 2.3 cents per kilowatt hour. These numbers do not include any state tax subsidies or investment tax credits.)
No wonder PSO is racing to get under the wire for this fat federal subsidy and is asking the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to help. The Oklahoma attorney general is correct to put a stop to this (“Attorney general wants Corporation Commission to reject PSO’s Wind Catcher project,” Aug. 16).
Those giant white whirling things you see in western Oklahoma are not wind farms. They are tax farms.
Enjoy them, you are paying for them.
