A fire at the Osterild Test Centre in Jutland, Denmark on Friday evening has destroyed the nacelle of an MHI Vestas V164 wind turbine.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but the company has expressed relief that there were no casualties associated with the incident.

MHI Vestas said: “We are grateful that no one was injured. The fire brigade was called immediately and secured the area around the turbine. As soon as possible, and once it is safe to do so, we will begin investigating the cause of the fire.

“The incident will not affect our construction and installation timetables.”

According to site owner DTU, the test platform was hosting the manufacturer’s 9.5 MW offshore wind prototype.

RE-News reports that emergency services allowed the fire atop the 222-metre machine to burn itself out. Video posted on social media showed a large amount of black smoke emanating from the machine.

MHI Vestas has been testing the V164 platform at Osterild since 2014. The 8 MW version of the V164 is deployed near Esbjerg, Denmark, and at Dong Enegy’s operational 258 MW Burbo Bank 2 offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
