A critic of the price of renewable energy has been picked to lead an official review of energy bills.
Oxford University professor Dieter Helm was yesterday named as head of an independent study into how the Government can meet climate change targets but keep costs down for consumers.
Prof Helm said he would ‘sort out the facts from the myths about the cost of energy’.
Last week, British Gas hiked electricity prices 12.5 per cent for three million customers.
But officials stressed the new study would not include looking at whether a cap should be imposed on price rises – a Tory election commitment watered down since Theresa May lost her Commons majority.
Prof Helm, who is to report in October, has previously raised questions over the cost of windfarms and solar power.
Energy Secretary Greg Clark said he would bring ‘invaluable expertise to the review’.
But consumer group Which? said: ‘Yet another review is going to be cold comfort to the millions overpaying on their energy bills right now.’
