BROADLANDS – A Texas company is planning to build a wind farm in Douglas County.

Chris Matthews, project manager for Houston-based EDP Renewables, said the company is in the early stages of planning the wind farm, which he said will be located just south of Broadlands.

“We selected Douglas County because the wind resources are good in this region,” Matthews said.

The project, to be called the Broadlands Wind Farm, will be a 200-megawatt facility, he said.

Matthews estimates that from 58 to 75 wind turbines will be erected on farms throughout the area. The exact number will be determined by the size and type selected by EDP at a later date.

“We are actively pursuing land owners to lease land in the area on which we plan to place our wind turbines,” Matthews said.

He said the project is expected to take six to eight months to complete.

But don’t look for the turbines any time soon. Matthews said EDP doesn’t plan to start construction until the spring of 2019.

“We would hope to have the project wrapped up at the end of 2019,” he said.

According to the EDP’s website, the company entered the U.S. market in 2007 with the acquisition of Horizon Wind Energy LLC from Goldman Sachs.

Since then, EDP says it has more than doubled its wind-power production, making it one of the world’s largest producers of that type of energy.
