Wind is wrong alternative energy

In response to the May 11 editorial “State must capitalize on wind,” I urge anyone who thinks wind farms are a good thing for Nebraska to take a day trip to see the Osborn wind farm in Missouri.
It’s on U.S. Highway 36, just east of St. Joseph. Having just gone into production in December 2016, this facility presumably is fairly representative of the latest in wind turbine technology.
I’ve had occasion to pass through the area twice recently. I was stunned by the sheer enormity and ugliness of the turbines, stretching for miles on either side of the four-lane, divided highway.
The area is fairly well populated by small farms and acreages (many still displaying anti-wind farm signs), and it was shocking and dismaying to see those houses and farms now surrounded by those gigantic, otherworldly looking machines.
Someone is making a whole lot of money off this enterprise, while the electricity goes elsewhere, and the locals suffer the fallout. Is this what the future of Nebraska looks like?
As a homeowner with a geothermal heat pump and solar panels, I’m certainly not opposed to alternative energy. What I am opposed to is ugliness and waste, and, in my opinion, these wind farms are the embodiment of both. Please, let’s not sell ourselves out for a few dollars.
