Chesaning Township board discusses wind turbines

CHESANING TWP. – During the May 4 meeting of the Chesaning Township Board, supervisor Bob Corrin asked, “Do we or don’t we want to get involved with a wind ordinance?”
Trustee Pete Hemgesberg asked, “Would it even work here?”
Corrin explained there is a restriction for height and fall distance, so they don’t fall on anything. “We’re very limited in the township. Where could we put them with all of the development? I’ve talked with a farmer; he would like it.”
There’s someone in Shiawassee County pushing for wind energy, Corrin said, “He lives in Virginia.”
Corrin pointed out Saginaw County hasn’t written an ordinance for wind energy either.
Hemgesberg said, “We’re in the bowl.”
“If a neighbor has a wind tower, would they have the right to cross your property?” Corrin asked.
Trustee Ken Hornak said, “Power companies are required to comply with federal regulations. Federal regulations require that they comply with the 10 percent minimum from renewable energy.”
Clerk Kukulis said, “I’ve heard our new president is planning to eliminate the incentives.”
Treasurer Cathy Gross asked if there are any wind turbines in Saginaw County.
Corrin responded, “No, they come right up to the Gratiot County line.”
