Wind power project proposed in Northumberland County

Up to 1,000 acres in Coal and East Cameron townships is being considered for a wind power project in Northumberland County.

The county commissioners agreed Tuesday to allow DGP Power, LLC, to spend 18 months exploring for development purposes the property off Burnside Mountain near the border with Schuylkill County.

“This is a project in which 1,000 acres could be set aside for wind energy to offset the high cost of fuel and coal,” board chairman Samuel Deitrick said.

DGP Power is working with a German-based company, Juwi GmbH, to form Penn Wind & PA Solar LLC in Sunbury. The new enterprise would work with communities in Northumberland County to evaluate property, lease land and design, build and operate wind farms.

Mr. Deitrick said the land in Coal and East Cameron townships has been strip-mined but may be ideal for producing alternative wind energy.

The county is giving the company up to 18 months to test the land and will sell each acre for $1,800.

“We hope this would come into fruition,” Mr. Deitrick said.
