Inquiries are continuing after a man fell to his death at the Kilgallioch windfarm site near Barrhill.

The 37-year-old Gamesa contractor was working on a project at the Scottish Power base on 6.45pm on Wednesday, March 15.

Emergency services attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. It is understood the man fell inside a turbine tower.
The site remains closed while investigations are carried out.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland, said: “At around 6.45pm on Wednesday, March 15, police were called to a report of a man being injured at a windfarm being injured between Barrhill and Newton Stewart.

“Emergency services attended and the 37-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The site is currently closed and enquiries at an early stage.

“The health and safety executives have been informed and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

A ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) spokesperson said: “SPR can confirm the fatality of a 37-year-old man working for a contractor at Kilgallioch wind farm in South Ayrshire.

“A full investigation is now under way by the police and the HSE. SPR will support and co-operate fully with these investigations.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the technician involved in the incident.”
Spanish manufacturer Gamesa is supplying 96 turbines at the site.

A spokeswoman for them said: “Gamesa is conducting a thorough investigation together with the authorities to establish the root cause of this fatal accident.

“Work at the wind farm has been stopped while the investigation takes place. We are very saddened and our thoughts go to the family of the employee.”

It has not been long since a turbine collapsed at Kilgallioch in the early hours of Friday, January 13 during stormy weather.

It is claimed the generation failed around halfway up the structure, according to one project source but as it was not then operational, noone was in the vicinity at that time.

The windfarm project is due to be operational later this year.
