I read Frank Mand’s Jan. 25, 2017, article on the Plymouth Advisory and Finance Committee’s overwhelming rejection of a plan to allow 15 acres of open space near a residential area to be used for a solar array. I now have at least a little bit of hope for the residents of Plymouth.
I read Frank Mand’s Jan. 25, 2017, article on the Plymouth Advisory and Finance Committee’s overwhelming rejection of a plan to allow 15 acres of open space near a residential area to be used for a solar array. I now have at least a little bit of hope for the residents of Plymouth. The full impact of these “green” projects on residents must be evaluated before they are approved and I give Finance Committee members Betty Cavacco and Sheila Sheridan, as well as Town Meeting member Rep. Betsy Hall, great credit for standing up for all Plymouth residents and seeing the “green” boondoggle for what it is.
I was most heartened to read Committee Vice Chairman Harry Salerno’s wise assessment that “people buy their homes expecting to be surrounded by other homes” and that “we have to balance what’s fair to all the taxpayers.” Salerno went on to say that people who “bought a home in a residential area did not expect to be surrounded by a solar farm or wind farm.” How refreshing is that! They seem to understand what is being done to rural residential neighborhoods in Plymouth.
Simon Thomas was once again playing “Simon Says” before a Plymouth town board and advocating that ConEdison’s and his own business interests are more important than the right of Plymouth residents to the quiet enjoyment of their property. This time, Simon himself was called out. Salerno pointed out that these “green” projects are commercial uses of the property and that if the “experts” left the room, ordinary Plymouth residents (who do not have a financial stake in the project) would agree with that assessment.
Solar arrays and wind turbines are commercial and industrial projects that impact Plymouth residents and taxpayers. The four 493-foot turbines that I see from my home every day are supported by federal and state tax credits or subsidies and provide no benefit to Plymouth and contribute very little to the energy needs of Massachusetts. The only truly “green” thing that they generate is money for ConEdison, Keith Mann, Simon Thomas and their investors.
Plymouth residents should stay vigilant. Richard Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell once famously said: “Watch what we do, not what we say.” We did and it led to the removal of a president. We need to watch what is being done to us locally, because it is clear that they will keep trying to impose these inappropriate projects on the neighborhoods of Plymouth.
