Wind blows, Tuscola boards change

TUSCOLA COUNTY – The same winds for change in the presidential election swept through two Tuscola County townships.

Following Tuesday’s election, there are several new members on the Almer Charter Township Board as well as on the Ellington Township Board. Some of those who won seats are members of the Ellington-Almer Concerned Citizens group, which has voiced concerns over wind-development ordinances.

NextEra Energy Resources is in the process to develop Tuscola III Wind Energy Center in those two townships as well as Fairgrove Township.

NextEra Energy Resources filed for special use permits for constructing wind turbines in those townships, but further steps to move the project forward were postponed until after the election this week.

Newcomers on the Almer board are trustees Jim Tussey, Art Graff, Jim Rosentangel, and incumbent Brian Schriber. Voters retained incumbent Clerk Peggy Reavey and Treasurer Patricia Witkovsky. James Mantey defeated veteran Jim Micklovic in the August election to become supervisor.

In Ellington Township, newcomer Russell Spiers became supervisor, newcomer Bobbie Mozden became clerk, newcomer Carmell Pattullo became treasurer, and the trustee seats went to incumbent Mike Wagner and newcomer Gregg Campbell.

Some of the representatives who are members of the Ellington-Almer Concerned Citizens group are Graff, Pattullo, Speirs and Campbell. And, some of the other board-elect-members support change and transparency.

“We understand the people of Tuscola want a wind project that will balance the property rights of both participating and non-participating landowners. That’s just what we are proposing to do with the Tuscola III project,” said NextEra Energy Resources Project Director Ryan Pumford. “This is a project that will deliver substantial benefits to the Tuscola community. It will generate clean energy that’s safe and reliable, with good jobs, and millions of dollars in landowner payments, property taxes and economic stimulus for local businesses.”

Tuscola III Wind Energy Center is a $200 million project with plans for 52 turbines – in Fairgrove, Ellington and Almer townships.

“In the months ahead, we intend to work with local elected officials, both current and future, as well as the citizens of Tuscola County, to build a project this community can be proud of for years to come,” Pumford said.
