Wind turbine might be taken down at Lake Land

MATTOON – A damaged 160-foot-tall, 100-kilowatt wind turbine on the main campus of Lake Land College might be taken down.
The members of the Lake Land Board of Trustees reported during their meeting Monday evening that they agree with President Josh Bullock’s recommendation that the college begin exploring the possibility of decommissioning the south turbine, said college spokeswoman Kelly Allee.
Bullock has said the southernmost wind turbine of Lake Land’s two 100-kilowatt turbines was damaged by lightning last summer and has not functioned properly since then. He has said the administration does not believe that making the nearly $100,000 in repairs estimated for the turbine would be cost effective.
Lake Land could take down the south 100-kilowatt turbine and use its components for ongoing alternative energy technologies classes, Bullock has said. The college’s two 100-kilowatt turbines, 10-kilowatt turbine, and 750-watt turbine are adjacent to the West Building.
The two 100-kilowatt turbines were installed in 2012 after Lake Land bought them from Bora Energy of Wood Dale. This project was made possible with federal grant funding.
In other matters, the board voted to approve the $29,998 bid from EconoBright Technologies Inc. of Charleston to provide LED lighting for the Vo-Tech Building. This facility is scheduled to be renovated during the summer as part of a project funded by a bond issue.
The board also seated new officers for the year. Gary Cadwell will continue to serve as chairman, Dave Storm is now the vice chairman, and Doris Reynolds is now the secretary. The newly seated student trustee is Jensyn Morrison of Cowden.
