Company bidding to build new windfarm

Independent renewable energy company, Your Energy, is looking to create a new windfarm in west Cumbria.
The firm, which operates in the UK and France, is proposing seven turbines, which would generate enough electricity for about 4,000 homes, on land at Winscales Moor near Workington.
It would be near the existing windfarm at Winscales, between the A595 and A66.
Matt Kelly, project manager for Your Energy, said: “This site is suitable for a number of reasons ““ being next to an existing windfarm, which has become an accepted part of the local landscape, and it has shown that it has good wind speeds and low ecological impact.
“The Winscales Moor Windfarm will generate clean electricity for approximately 4,000 homes, help to fight climate change and raise tens of thousands of pounds for local energy efficiency initiatives in Allerdale. We also want to be a good neighbour. With profits from the sale of the windfarm’s electricity we are establishing a special fund ““ at least £130,000 in total over the 25-year lifetime of the turbines ““ that will award grants to local schemes involving energy efficiency.
“These could range from the insulation of village halls to educational projects with schools about renewable energy and the role it can play in helping to tackle climate change.”
While most new windfarm proposals in the UK are for turbines of between 100m and 125m high, Your Energy is proposing smaller turbines, with a maximum height of 81m, so they will fit in with the landscape and the existing turbines.
They would generate up to 9.1mw of renewable electricity, which is the equivalent to 10 per cent of Allerdale’s domestic electricity needs. It also represents an annual saving of over 16,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide ““ one of the greenhouse gases driving up the world’s temperature.
Your Energy, which needs planning permission from Allerdale Council for the proposed windfarm, said local contractors would be used wherever possible in the construction, which could potentially inject up to £2 million into the local economy.
Your Energy Ltd will be holding a public exhibition about the proposal in the Carnegie Arts Centre in Workington on Tuesday October 10.
