Study: state commitment could halve offshore wind costs over next decade

BOSTON – A state commitment to develop offshore wind power at a scale of 2,000 MW could cut costs of the renewable energy in half over the next decade, according to a new study by industry supporters.
“That kind of cost reduction, driven by market forces, will put offshore wind on a clear path to deliver clean power at competitive prices for millions of ratepayers in the Boston area and beyond, and make the renewable resource a key contributor to the state’s clean energy future,” states a press release announcing the study, conducted by the University of Delaware’s Special Initiative on Offshore Wind.
The initiative is affiliated with the university’s College of Earth, Ocean & Environment, and “supports offshore wind power as part of a comprehensive US energy solution, offering expertise (and) analysis…to build understanding and drive deployment,” the release states.
SouthCoast legislators and offshore wind industry advocates are pushing for a significant “carve-out” for offshore wind in broad energy legislation that could be drafted this spring on Beacon Hill.
