Falmouth selectmen mum on turbine permit

FALMOUTH – The Falmouth selectmen made no public comment about the town’s wind turbines at their Monday meeting, the first since Zoning Board of Appeals members indicated they would reject the town’s application for a special permit to run one of the devices.
The zoning board took no vote during a Saturday morning session, but the majority of its five members found fault with at least one aspect of the town’s application to run Wind 1, one of its twin wind turbines at the wastewater treatment plant. Since a vote was not taken there was no public comment or discussion at the selectmen’s meeting, despite the topic being on the board’s agenda, Selectman Doug Jones, board chairman, said.
The zoning board will approve at a later meeting its ruling on the permit for the 397-foot-tall Wind 1 turbine, which began spinning five years ago. The town was forced to go through the permit process after the state Appeals Court ruled last year that the machine, which helps power the treatment plant, should have received zoning approval before it was constructed.
