Dryden Town Board to address renewable energy

The Dryden Town Board will present a proposed renewable energy ordinance for public comment at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5. The hearing, initially planned at the fire hall, will be held instead at the town hall, 65 E. Main St.
The Town of Dryden currently lacks an ordinance regulating renewable energy sources and therefore has been unable to issue related permits. The proposed law, introduced by board member Mary Ann Sumner, would allow households and small-scale businesses to install wind energy systems with up to 10 kilowatts of power output and standing up to 140 feet high.
The ordinance would set limits on systems’ proximity to adjacent property, public highways, power lines, Important Bird Areas (as identified by the N.Y. Audubon) and state wetlands. Under the guidelines, only one system per lot would be permitted, unless the applicant can show outstanding need. Those wishing to apply for a special use permit would be required to pay a $250 application fee.
Regulations are also proposed for other renewable energy systems, such as solar systems, that are placed on poles or on structures other than the one being served.
