Longer blades plan for ‘Lincolnshire’s biggest wind farm’ sparks new protest

Wind farm protesters are gearing up for a new campaign because a power firm wants to increase the diameter of blades which are already the length of a football pitch.
Residents claims they had no idea the changes were being asked for at what’s being dubbed Lincolnshire’s biggest wind farm, which will generate electricity.
The plans for 22 turbines were submitted by Ecotricity and planning was approved by the Government in 2013. The development will be built at East Heckington Fen – half way between Boston and Sleaford.
But Melvin Grosvenor, from the new campaign group Heck Off, said that although the developer had consulted on changes to extend the blades, many residents knew nothing about it.
They are now organising a meeting to create an action plan to effectively get their point of view to decision-makers and the developers.
He said: “It will be the biggest wind farm in Lincolnshire and there was a lot of opposition to it at the time it was submitted.
“The blades they have permission for are 90 metres in diameter so each blade is 45 metres long and they want to increase the blades to 103 metres in diameter – that is 6.5 metres on each blade, so the distance off the ground is only 22 metres. That is significant as we have seen they cause noise issues.
“The new variation has gone back into consultation and a letter has come from the Department for Energy and Climate Change and it asked everybody who was informed to let it know their thoughts by February 10.”
Mr Grosvenor has written to complain about the development to the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
A meeting is due tomorrow night at The Hume, South Kyme, at 7pm, to create an action plan aiming to get resident’s point of views across.
It is believed up to 200 residents could be affected by the development.
Mr Grosvenor added: “Residents did not know the consultation had reopened and the letter that went out was only delivered to people living in the North Kesteven area.
“We have to re-open the consultation, we have to make as much noise about it as possible – the people who should have responded didn’t even know about it.
“Local communities should be heard.”
One of the residents who will be affected by the wind turbines is Chris Jones. He lives in Sleaford but his business, Get Knotted Furniture, is based in Heckington.
He said: “I think the plans need to be made crystal clear about what they are going to do and people should be made aware of it.
“They are a debatable item but they are like pylons and people are used to seeing them now – we need to move forward with the times.”
North Kesteven District Councillor, Stewart Ogden, who represents Heckington added: “It is always good for people to have their say about anything, whatever their opinion they should always be heard.”
A second meeting is to be held by Heck Off at 7pm on March 3 at Hubberts Bridge Community Centre.
