Kingfisher Wind: No completion by end-of-year deadline

KINGFISHER – An Oklahoma wind project in Canadian and Kingfisher County will not be completed by its deadline, according to an Apex Clean Line Energy official.
Apex spokeswoman Davhi Wilson said construction with the Kingfisher Wind facility is ongoing, even though it was scheduled to be completed before the end of 2015.
“Though we have been working hard to achieve our goal to be fully operational by the end of this year, we have experienced some standard construction delays on the project,” she said in a written statement. “We anticipated that at year end, two-thirds of the project’s turbines will be fully operational.”
The project should be fully operational in the first half of 2016, Wilson said.
Apex continues to remain in a legal battle over the Kingfisher project.
Residents in Kingfisher and Canadian counties remain in a legal battle with the company, which began more than a year ago. In October, plaintiffs filed a motion to advance the case and seek a permanent injunction because the process of adding wind turbines to the area had begun.
The motion to advance the case was denied. U.S. District Judge Timothy D. DeGiusti scheduled a trial date to begin in April 2016 in Oklahoma City.
Wilson said there have been no significant developments regarding the lawsuit. She said the deadline for completing discovery is Feb. 5, 2016.
The project, and several involved parties, recently have won two awards.
Apex, along with First Reserve, Gulf Power Co. and Morgan Stanley Commodities were named joint recipients for the Commodities Deal of the Year award for the Kingfisher Wind project.
According to a release on the award, Apex is the project originator, the project owner is First Reserve, the power hedge provider is MSCG and the power purchaser is Gulf Power Co.
The project and individuals also received the Platts Global Energy Awards Financial Deal of the Year.
The project is one of the larger conducted in northwest Oklahoma by APEX. Its capacity is estimated to be 300 megawatt with the ability to power 100,000 homes.
According to Apex’s website, the company expects to invest $452 million in Kingfisher Wind. The project will create 11 or 12 long-term jobs to maintain and operate the facility.
