Airtricity gets tax break for new wind farm

SWEETWATER – Another multi-million dollar wind farm will be constructed in Nolan County and in part of Fisher County starting next year.
Nolan County commissioners approved a 60 percent tax abatement for Airtricity during the first five years the wind farm is in operation, and a 40 percent tax abatement for the next five years.
Even with the abatement, Nolan County will still realize around $3 million in taxes over a 10-year period.
The new wind farm will be constructed in both Nolan and Fisher counties near Inadale.
The target date for construction to start is May 2008. It should be completed by December 2009.
Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough said this is the third project that Airtricity has launched in the county.
“They are still within the construction phases of two, which are located south of I-20 and Roscoe,” he said.
The latest project will result in about 125 wind towers.
“We appreciate the excellent cooperation and benefits being afforded through Airtricity toward the development and economic growth of our region,” Fambrough said.
Airtricity develops and operates wind farms in Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, the United States and Canada.
Nolan County is home to other wind energy farms. The wind energy industry is growing in the Big Country, with wind farms either up and running or planned north, south, east and west of Abilene.
