Concerns at growth of wind turbines

A motion tabled by Cllr Tom Wood at the September meeting of Tipperary Co. Council, called on Management to advise as to the number of Wind Turbines erected throughout the county to date.

Cllr Wood inquired as to the number granted permission but awaiting construction and that as a concerned local authority “a stay be put on any further grants of permission for the duration of the present Council was seconded and passed without any dissenting voices.” In a response to the motion he was advised that 307 wind turbines had been permitted to date with approximately 164 constructed or under construction. He was also informed that the Planning and Development Act, 2,000 (as amended) does not provide a provision to put a stay on acceptance of a planning application or the subsequent assessment of a planning application as may be received. Cllr Wood added: “There are many valid reasons why this motion requesting, that a stay be placed on any further Grants of Permission for the erection of Wind Turbines in our County for the duration of the present Council, could and should be supported. I could cite the fact that we are awaiting new National Guidelines on Wind Energy Development ; That our National Energy White Paper is only a work in progress; That our Renewable Energy Support Scheme is under revision as is this Counties Renewable Energy Strategy and our own County Development Plan.
