Ten towering turbines taller than Big Ben planned for Lincolnshire

A German energy company has submitted plans to build 10 industrial wind turbines near Grantham.

Energiekontor UK Ltd has applied to South Kesteven District Council to construct the turbines, each reaching 360 ft, on the former RAF Fulbeck airfield.

If permission is granted the site will be operational for 25 years.

The proposed site is just one and a half miles away from the Temple Hill wind farm application submitted by RWE Innogy that was rejected by local councillors in March 2015.

Leadenham Parish Council invited the company to attend a meeting about the proposal back in December 2013.

Public consultations were then held in Leadenham village hall, Caythorpe village hall and Stubton village hall in February 2014.

Now reVOLTand VETO, campaign groups against wind turbines, say the reasons for the Temple Hill refusal including the impact on heritage, landscape and the local economy – are all equally applicable to Fulbeck Airfield.

Campaign spokesperson Paul Miley said: “Our campaign was all about appropriate renewables – this community already has an operational solar farm, a second under construction and Fulbeck Airfield is currently used to collect straw for the renewable energy plant at Sleaford.”

“By disregarding previous local decisions and ignoring the overwhelming majority of local residents and businesses opposed to such developments, this smacks of opportunism. Is this an arrogant industry trying to challenge new national planning guidance, or a final scramble before the wind farm subsidy pot runs out?”

The campaign group says a poll of local households showed 97% opposition to the Temple Hill wind farm and nearly 1000 individual letters of objection were submitted.

It says polls to gauge the community’s attitude to the Fulbeck airfield wind farm are underway and preliminary results demonstrate similar levels of opposition.

Responses to the proposed plans can be made by visiting www.southkesteven.gov.uk and searching for S15/1764 in the planning applications section.
