Winds of concern swirl around turbines

NORTH RIVER – Noise and health issues were prevalent topics covered at a rate payers’ meeting last night to discuss proposed windmills for Nuttby Mountain.
About 40 people attended the meeting with representatives from Atlantic Wind Power and Cobequid Wind Power, who hope to bring 22 or 24 turbines to Nuttby Mountain.
“I’m concerned about health problems to humans and animals,” said Nuttby’s Lori MacLaren.
“There are all sorts of studies … there is no evidence to link infrasound and the turbines causing health problems,” said Charles Demond, president of Atlantic Wind Power.
“We are at the mercy at the oil and coal companies,” said East Mountain’s Brian Phelan.
“If we have wind power we may be able to hold (energy prices) …”
Phelan visited a wind mill in Cheticamp and said “about 200 feet away I couldn’t hear it.”
Dartmouth’s Paul Downing knows people who live near a wind mill.
“(The noise) was above background noise levels by double,” said Downing. “I do think they are a fantastic idea … but in the right location.”
Two test holes have been drilled in the area to check soil conditions. If approved, construction would begin in 2008. They would be 1 1/2 kms from the nearest resident and between 600 and 900 metres from hunting camps.
The topic will be discussed at the Oct. 11 Colchester County committee meeting.
