Chislet residents tell energy giant: ‘We don’t want your windfarm’

More than 100 anti-windfarm protesters turned out in Chislet on Monday to oppose plans to erect 11 wind turbines nearby. to the area.
The protest group, Stop Chislet Windfarm, showed up alongside the area’s MP, Sir Roger Gale at Chislet Church to show the strength of feeling against the wind farm, proposed for an area off the A299 Thanet Way.
Each of the turbines would be at least 125 metres tall.
The proposals for the Chislet Marshes were put forward by Renewable Energy Systems (RES), which was in the middle of a six-hour consultation in Herne Bay when the group arrived en masse at 7pm on Monday.
Residents have raised objections since the plans were made public last month, insisting including concerns the wind farm would disturb local wildlife, and ruin the character of the area.
Sir Roger, speaking at the meeting, said it was important to make it clear that the proposal was “a non-starter:
“The message has to go out to RES: thank you for your courtesy, thank you for your consideration, but we don’t want it here.”
Dr Ashley Lupin, who spoke on behalf of the Stop Chislet Windfarm group, said: “What RES really want is to report that they have had no objections. We will not let that happen.
“We local people are not a handful of country bumpkins… we are passionate, we are angry, and we are organised. I can assure you, we will fight you, and this plan, for as long as it takes.”
Speaking to the Times, RES’ Alison Jones explained why Chislet Marshes was an attractive option.
She said: “It has good access, and good wind speed, which is obviously important.
“It’s not a specially designated area, it’s not a wildlife park, and it is not an area of outstanding natural beauty.”
