Wind turbine parts to go through Buzzards Bay

The Pennsylvania firm that will transport wind-turbine parts from the Port of New Bedford to Keith Mann’s cranberry tract in Head of the Bay will deliver apparatus through the heart of Buzzards Bay village instead of westerly across the Red Brook bridge along Head of the Bay Road at the Wareham line.
“We’ll go through Buzzards Bay now,” said Eric Gagnon, Gamesa Corp. project manager, Monday afternoon. “That was the original route.”
Gagnon said four early-morning deliveries are planned in early August. The delivery route from the New Bedford pier must circumvent the closed Fairhaven-New Bedford Bridge en route to Route 6 eastbound and a connection in Wareham with Route 28 along the Cranberry Highway across the Cohasset Narrows Bridge.
The final part of the delivery route involves Head of the Bay Road from Belmont Circle north and west to the entrance to the Mann acreage that abuts Route 25 and where a four-turbine wind-farm is being constructed.
A second ship in New Bedford, meanwhile, is offloading turbine parts shipped from Spain. Other turbine pieces come from various states, while the blades are imported from China, Gagnon said.
Bourne selectmen, meanwhile, have considered Head of the Bay Road easement issues related to turbine deliveries, one involving the planned removal of guardrails at the Mann-property entrance. The board was also concerned about roadway impacts at the Red Brook bridge, which carried sewer, water, and gas-line conduit.
It could not be determined Monday night if delivery-route impacts in Buzzards Bay proper had been considered by town officials. The delivery trucks will be escorted by State Police along the route.
Gagnon, meanwhile, said he anticipated few impacts along the route, noting the Mann delivery is the fourth such project Gamesa has undertaken in Massachusetts.
