Cambuslang residents deny claims they acted in a threatening manner to wind turbine team

Cambuslang residents campaigning against a wind turbine near their homes deny claims they have threatened representatives of the group behind the plan.
Loanend and Flemington Farm Cottages residents were surprised to read in last week’s Reformer that members of Healthy ‘n’ Happy community development trust had been: “abused, threatened and subjected to aggressive personal insults and verbal attacks.”
Resident Liisa Hepworth, speaking on behalf of the residents, strongly refuted the suggestion.
She said: “We categorically deny the claim and will be writing to Healthy ‘n’ Happy to request they validate these claims.
“A small number of the community were given the opportunity to meet Jane Churchill, assistant director of Healthy ‘n’ Happy to express their views. Letters outlining our detailed concerns have also been sent to the executive director of Healthy ‘n’ Happy .
“We believed that Healthy ‘n’ Happy were coming out to visit some of us two weeks ago, as part of their consultation, to listen to and respond to our concerns. Instead, some neighbours were faced with an Healthy ‘n’ Happy representative who showed no empathy in relation to concerns raised.
“One resident spoke with passion, because he cares so much for this community and is strongly against the proposal, and it’s quite possible that it is what he said which has been misinterpreted, because no one in this community would support that kind of action.”
Liisa and her neighbours believe that comments in last week’s paper have been taken out of context and personal offence was not intended.
She continued: “All residents hoped for was that this charity would approach this proposal differently to commercial windturbine developers who generally have little consideration to local concerns.
“Instead, local residents were faced with responses to their concerns from the Healthy ‘n’ Happy representative such as ‘I don’t mind them… I quite like looking at them,’ and ‘I’d rather have a wind turbine than fracking near to me,’ which were not well received.
“One neighbour stated that a representative from Green Cat laughed out loud inappropriately in response to genuine concerns. A number of other responses were met with, ‘I’ll feed that back to the board.’ The community look forward to hearing back from the HnH board on this matter.”
The residents, some of whom have taken legal advice on the matter, hope that the plans will be dropped by Healthy ‘n’ Happy.
Liisa added: “Most of the community have lived at this location for many decades and some for their whole lifetimes and do not want a large industrial 76m wind turbine close to their homes.
“They fully recognise that the charity is trying to generate more money from this wind turbine proposal to help all of Cambuslang and Rutherglen but feel let down by them for not listening and understanding our concerns.”
