Orleans residents make pitch for turbine project

ORLEANS – Several residents yesterday asked water commissioners and selectmen to reconsider last week’s unexpected votes that killed a 4-year-old effort to erect two wind turbines in the town’s watershed.
Yesterday afternoon, water commissioners listened to comments from the newly formed Committee to Save Orleans Wind and a few other residents, but the town officials made no formal response.
Last night, about 30 residents asked selectmen to try to fight the commission’s veto of the project. Voters have backed the turbine project at town meeting.
“Do you think it’s worthwhile going to town meeting the way I do?” resident Jacqueline Philbrick asked selectmen last night.
“When something like this happens, I feel I’ve just wasted my time.”
In a related development last night, the selectmen declined to accept the resignation of water commissioner and wind turbine advocate Kevin Galligan. They praised his work and asked, in a letter, if he would reconsider stepping down.
As of press time last night, selectmen were still talking about whether to ask the water commission to reconsider its rejection of the turbine project.
