Out-of-control windmill closes Dillon Road

An out-of-control, decommissioned wind turbine closed portions of Dillon Road in Palm Springs on Wednesday.

The road was closed between Diablo Road and Indian Canyon Avenue from about 11:30 a.m. to 2:30p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The road closure was requested by the Riverside County Fire Department, who was concerned the turbine could rain debris on the road.

Jody Hagemann, a fire department spokeswoman, said the turbine was about 500 to 1,000 feet from any roadway. Eventually, the turbine stopped spinning without incident or injury, she said.

“It wasn’t active so the wind was just pushing it and spinning it,” Hagemann said. “Sometimes they have issues with the brakes on them.”
