Wind farms ‘of great concern’ to some

The former head of the government’s premier medical research body has defended spending another $2.5 million on further studies into wind farms.

That’s despite the National Health and Research Council having already concluded there is no direct evidence exposure to noise from wind farms affects physical or mental health.

Warwick Anderson, who has stepped down as the council’s chief executive, says the additional money was minimal and not a “huge diversion” of overall funding.

It may facilitate discoveries about the wind farm industry more broadly – but it would be wrong to dismiss an issue of great concern to many.

“I’m not in the slightest bit apologetic of what we’ve done there,” Prof Anderson told the National Press Club on Wednesday.

“And I think it’s like a lot of new technologies: there are concerns that people have to start off with (and) with good research (they) can go away or be shown to be of (merit).”

Prof Anderson bemoaned how the issue has dogged the tail end of his time at the council, saying he’s been asked more about wind farms than cancer, Aboriginal health or mental health issues.

“It’s really extraordinary,” he said.
