Wind farm may start near Finley

FINLEY, N.D. – A large community-owned wind farm is being proposed near this east central North Dakota town.

The proposed project initially would produce 150 megawatts of electricity, with plans to expand to between 380 and 500 megawatts, said Warren Enyart, chief executive officer of the Griggs-Steele Empowerment Zone, a group that helps finance business projects.

Five hundred megawatts is enough to power about 500,000 homes.

The first phase of the project, which would involve more than 90 landowners, would be built on land in southwestern Steele and eastern Griggs counties, said Keith Monson, president of M-Power LLC.

M-Power was formed last year by the Griggs-Steele Empowerment Zone and the Griggs-Steele Wind Development Group.

Monson said no timetable has been established for the project. He said the company is trying to secure power purchase agreements with utilities. M-Power has not yet submitted an application to the North Dakota Public Service Commission.
