Balbeggie windfarm plans queried by residents

Residents had the chance to examine plans for 100% community-owned windfarm near Balbeggie at the weekend.

It is estimated that the windfarm would contribute £650,000 per annum to a community benefit fund.

One of the core reasons for the consultation was to discover the community projects that local people would be most keen to see receive the funding.

Residents have come together in the Windfall Community Trust, which says the cash would be available for groups in Balbeggie, Burreltown, Guildtown, Coupar Angus and surrounding hamlets.

The money would be allocated by the trust on the basis of need, rather than for the type of project.

Projects could include the creation of a local orchard for residents to use, the upgrading of cycle routes and the improvement of sports facilities.

Carbon reduction and environmental projects, such as grants to install solar panels, could be another use of the funding.

Members of the trust say they will only proceed if they have the community’s backing, however.
