Public has until Jan. 16 to comment on wind turbines

The federal agency assessing the environmental impact of placing two wind turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach has extended the public comment period on the project by two weeks.

The deadline for comments is now Jan. 16.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management recently issued a 210-page report examining the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of the project. No major impacts were found in what’s known as the “environmental assessment.”

The assessment is part of Dominion Virginia Power’s pilot project to install two nearly 600-foot-tall turbines to gather information that could lead to a large wind farm about 24 miles offshore. The pilot project also includes the installation of a cable to carry electricity from the turbines to shore.

To view the environmental assessment and submit a comment, go to BOEM’s website at: tinyurl.com/p2po42k.
