Opponents to wind turbine plans urged to speak out

Opponents of a plan to build three 266-feet-high wind turbines on the edge of Dartmoor are calling for support on the last day of a public inquiry into the plan.
Members of Okehampton and District Against Turbines (ODAT) hope that as many people as possible who are opposed to the scheme will attend the final day of the inquiry on Thursday.
The inquiry is into the appeal by West Coast Energy against refusal of planning permission by West Devon Borough Council for the three turbines at Yelland Farm, near Okehampton, close to the boundary of the Dartmoor National Park.
The inquiry began in June and ran for just over a week, but could not be completed, which is why the final day was put off until Thursday.
The hearing will include evidence from John Constable, of the Renewable Energy Foundation, and closing speeches from lawyers representing both sides of the inquiry. After that inquiry inspector Keith Smith will take around two weeks to complete his report which will then go to the Secretary of State to make a final decision.
Ray Quirke, of ODAT, said: “It is important that the inspector is left with the right impression that local people are interested in this matter and concerned about the impact it will have on the area.
“In this particularly area these turbines would be totally unacceptable. They would physically dominate the landscape. People come here for the wild and ancient landscape, they don’t want industrial buildings.”
Thursday’s hearing begins at 10am and will be held in the Charter Hall, Market Street, Okehampton.
