Sigh of relief as wind turbine plan is thrown out

Plans to build a controversial wind turbine have been turned down by councillors.
The application for the 94 metre high turbine to be built on land off Barlestone Road in Bagworth, infuriated residents who set up a protest group called Villagers Against the Turbine earlier this year.
They said that the site is not safe because it is former mining land and is prone to caving in.
But they can now breathe a sigh of relief as members of the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council planning committee voted to go with officers’ recommendations and throw out the plans.
The applicant hoped to get planning permission for a 25 year period to build the devise, which could generate up to 0.5MW of electricity.
But officers said the turbine was unacceptable and would ruin the landscape due to its size, scale and position to nearby Bagworth and Nailstone.
UK-based renewable energy project developer RES said the decision was wrong and that had it been approved, the 0.5 megawatt turbine would have been capable of generating enough renewable electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 470 homes.
Rebecca Meek, RES Project Manager said: “We are of course disappointed with the decision, particularly as it seems to contradict advice given by independent experts in the Hinckley and Bosworth Renewable Energy Capacity Study (2013) – which was commissioned by the borough council to identify suitable areas for renewable energy development.
“The site has been identified as being suitable to accommodate large scale wind turbines ranging from 80-135m in height, and we have proposed a turbine toward the lower end of this spectrum at 94m which would still make a significant contribution to UK renewable energy targets.
“Furthermore, from the feedback we received at the public exhibitions in March, 74% of respondents registered themselves as in favour of using wind energy to generate electricity with almost half of those filling in feedback forms indicating support for the Poplar House Farm Wind Turbine proposal.
“Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s decision is therefore at odds with both professional strategic recommendations about siting wind turbines in their area and the general public consensus that wind energy projects like Poplar House Farm are an acceptable way of generating electricity.”
