County agrees to amendment on wind turbine setback

PICTOU – An amendment has been made to an already amended wind energy bylaw for the county.

During a finance meeting Monday, the majority of county councillors agreed that a wind energy bylaw should be amended so that wind turbine setback could be no less than 1,000 metres from the nearest homes.

Council had originally approved an amendment that called for the setback to be 1,000 metres, but if homeowners in an area agreed, the setback could be shortened to 600 metres.

This amendment was sent back to the county’s planning advisory committee recently because council wanted it to consider a new amendment that removed the 600-metre option, so the setback would have to be at least 1,000 metres.

Coun. Robert Parker said by removing the 600-metre option, there is no chance for communities to be torn apart by people arguing over how close the setback should be.

“It will prevent disruption in the neighbourhoods by having a line drawn,” he said.

Council will need to approve to amendment at its December meeting.
