Wind turbines rejected over radar concern

Residents’ plans to build three wind turbines at their farms have been rejected after the Ministry of Defence raised concerns over ‘radar interference’.
The turbines, which would have situated on three separate farms in Oswaldtwistle, were unanimously rejected by planning bosses after an MOD report said they would cause ‘unacceptable interference to the Air Traffic Control radar at Warton (BAE’s aircraft factory)’.
Speaking at a planning committee meeting on Wednesday, November 5 councillor Judith Addison said that the MOD’s objections had created a ‘very strange’ situation.
Councillor Judith Addison added: “I find this a strange situation, as residents are making applications which are doomed to be rejected as concerns from the MOD are going to be listened to.
“Businesses are encouraged to have wind turbines, but then cannot go ahead with them.”
Councillor Tim O’Kane added: “We are encouraging people to become more eco-friendly and then we are knocking them back because of these MOD concerns.”
Coun O’Kane added that the council needed to ‘get to grips’ with the latest directives on radar in order to make decisions about future developments.
Simon Prideaux, Chief Planning Officer said: “This comes up time and time again and we have asked the MOD which sites would affect them, but because of issues
of national security they have said that they have to deal with each application on their own merit.
“We have to go by the advice which we are given.” In a report to the planning committee the MOD said: “Wind turbines have been shown to have detrimental effects on the performance of MOD ATC and Range Control radars.
“These effects include the desensitisation of radar in that could result in aircraft not being detected by the radar and therefore not presented to air traffic controllers.”
The first application rejected was a 40m high wind turbine on Ramsclough Farm, Haslingden Old Road, Oswaldtwistle.
The second was a 30m high turbine on Red Shell Lane Caravan, Oswaldtwistle.
The third was a 24.8m high turbine on Red Walls Farm, Broadfield, Oswaldtwistle.
