Residents step up the fight against pylons

Carmarthenshire residents have stepped up their opposition to the installation of overhead electricity cables and wooden pylons from the Brechfa wind farms following a packed out meeting in Carmarthen Livestock market.
In a meeting called by local residents, landowners agreed to work together to oppose the plans by Western Power Distribution to connect the wind farms at Brechfa to the national grid at Llandyfaelog.
Member of Parliament Jonathan Edwards addressed the meeting and vowed to continue his support for the community campaign.
In the meeting, local residents raised several concerns about the way in which the process is being conducted.
Many spoke of how representatives of Western Power Distribution turn up on their land unannounced, with no prior arrangements having been made.
Residents spoke of how they feel powerless to challenge what is happening on their own land.
MP Jonathan Edwards spoke of the need for a development protocol that he and Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas had called for four years ago during the Alltwalis wind farm development.
A protocol, Mr Edwards said, would give residents confidence in the process as they would be fully aware of what to expect, while simultaneously outlining a model of best practice to which developers should adhere. Residents resolved to engage land agents to assist them with the process of dealing with Western Power Distribution.
Jonathan Edwards MP said: “A development protocol would empower residents and make them fully aware of the various processes that they can expect to encounter.
“Similarly, it will provide a model of best practice to which the developer should adhere.
“Residents and landowners wouldn’t have encountered the problems they did if a clear, simple and concise protocol was in place.
“As the campaign steps up, I would urge all landowners to appoint a land agent.
“A land agent will not cost them a penny but will have the expertise to deal with Western Power Distribution on their behalf.”
Western Power Distribution has involved the public in stages of the planning process of the connection programme.
Earlier this summer it was agreed to place some of the powerlines underground on the outskirts of Carmarthen following concerns of the town council and residents.
It was argued by community leaders that the view up the Towy Valley could have been affected by the placing of powerlines above ground.
