Villagers fight wind farm plans

Villagers are gearing up to protest against plans for a six-turbine wind farm at Tallentire.
Renewable Energy Systems Ltd wants to build the 100-metre turbines at Hill Farm, between Tallentire and Gilcrux.
It hopes to lodge a planning application with Allerdale council in the next few weeks.
A public exhibition will be held next Thursday for people to see the plans and comment.
Rod Coy is a member of pressure group Tallentire Area Action Group, which protested against plans for wind farms near the village last year.
He is annoyed that the company only sent details of the consultation to residents a week before it happened and that plans are again being made for turbines in the area.
Mr Coy, of Dovenby, said: “Allerdale will be swamped by wind turbines at the expense of the landscape. It is unacceptable. There are significant views that this should not be going ahead.
“It is unacceptable that a five hour consultation is being held on a working day. I only got my flyer on Tuesday with a week’s notification.
“I will definitely be going to the consultation along with thousands of others.”
Alaistair Clarke, of Tallentire, said his house is nearest to where the wind farm would be built.
He said: “I will look out of my window and see them. I am in two minds. A part of me says we have to do something about the environment, but part of me says not in my back yard. I am not in favour of them going up but I wouldn’t protest.”
The company wanted to build two test masts last year in preparation for creating 15 wind turbines on Tallentire Hill, but the planning application was turned down.
An appeal was lodged and a planning inspector refused permission as he said they would cause unacceptable harm to the landscape.
Renewable Energy Systems claims the wind farm will bring significant environmental benefits.
Tom Fewster, the firm’s project manager, said: “We firmly believe this is an excellent location for harnessing the natural and abundant power of the wind without causing adverse impacts on the surrounding environment or local residents.
The exhibition is at Gilcrux Village Hall on Thursday, September 6, from 3pm to 8pm.
