80-metre wind mast for Bala gets go-ahead

An eighty-metre mast designed to measure wind speed and direction is to be erected near Bala – despite opposition from the town council and some residents.
The galvanised steel structure was approved at a meeting of Gwynedd Council’s planning committee at Pwllheli on Monday.
It will be situated at Bodelith Isaf, Llandderfel, and will stand at 80.2 metres, with galvanised steel anchoring cables stretching up to 50 metres from its base.
The anemometer mast will be built on what is presently farmland and is likely to be used to test whether or not the site is suitable for a wind turbine project.
On 9 April, a separate application was lodged by the same developer, Aberdare-based inf rastructure company Pennant Walters, to build two 115-metre turbines in the area. That application is expected to be heard by the local authority in the coming months.
Town councillors objected to the size of the mast and felt it would have a negative impact on the Berwyn range landscape.
