Greenwich wind farm opponents aren’t giving up

The Ohio Power Siting Board has given the green light to Greenwich Windpark, a new wind farm in southern Huron County, but opponents haven’t given up.

Greenwich Neighbors United, the group opposing the wind farm, will exercise its right to appeal the state board’s decision, said Kevin Ledet, chairman of the group.

In addition, the group has scheduled an informational meeting for Sept. 23 and is inviting everyone to attend, Ledet said.

On August 25, the power siting board voted to allow 6011 Greenwich Windpark, LLC, a subsidiary of Windlab Developments USA, to build the Greenwich Windpark. It would consist of up to 25 wind turbines in Greenwich Township, covering 4,650 acres of land leased from 26 landowners, east of Greenwich and just north of Richland County. The turbines would be up to 490.5 feet tall, with rotor diameters of up to 383 feet.

The board took its action after holding a public meeting on May 6 in Greenwich and soliciting public comments of months.

Opponents of the board’s August decision have 30 days to seek a rehearing, and Ledet said Tuesday that his group will meet that deadline and file for another hearing.

“We’re in the process of getting our ducks in order,” Ledet said. “It will be before the deadline.”

Requesting a rehearing essentially means that the board is being asked to reconsider its decision, said Matt Butler, a spokesman for the Ohio Power Siting Board.

Once the request for a rehearing is filed, the board has 30 days to grant or deny the request. However, the board can also ask for more time, delaying its decision, he said.

Greenwich Neighbors United is complaining that the big wind turbines will produce noise and light flickering, will kill birds and bats, will harm local agriculture and will create other issues.

Ledet said his group is inviting everyone to come to a Sept. 23 informational meeting.

In addition, Ledet said he and other wind farm opponents plan to show up to an Ohio Farm Bureau meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the fire station in Greenwich.

“The farm bureau is quite a player in this thing. They are very much pro wind turbine,” he said.

Opposition to the wind farm has grown in recent weeks.

Ledet said he didn’t speak up earlier because he didn’t realize the wind turbines would be so large.

He said he visualized small ones, and not the huge ones that are planned.
