Bird deaths

Regarding the wind farm deaths of raptors (Letters, 20 August), this new menace to eagles and other bird species is now only more apparent alongside the known criminal acts of poisoning and shooting.

The latest issue of the respected journal Dutch Birding notes that at a site in Norway four white-tailed eagles have been killed this spring alone, bringing the total to 13 over the past few years at this one wind farm. The same journal, about three years ago, quoted white-tailed eagles and white storks among 15 species killed at a large wind farm in eastern Germany.

It seems we are now not only desecrating large areas of our countryside with inefficient producers of electricity, but are going to allow a similar situation regarding protected species to develop here.
