Villagers plan public protest over proposed wind turbine development near Redcar

Villagers opposing a proposed wind turbine development near Redcar are preparing for a public protest.
Renewable energy firm Airvolution proposes to build two 140m turbines within half a mile of the villages of Wilton (600m away), Yearby (800m) and Kirkleatham (900m).
And on Saturday from 11am, people from all three villages are set to gather at the site for a public show of opposition.
Residents say they are concerned about the scale of the turbines – which will stand higher than the wind turbines in Coatham Bay – and the impact they could make on villagers’ lifestyles, and nearby conservation areas.
The development was first announced a year ago. Since then, more than 200 objections have been received by Redcar and Cleveland Council.
A spokesman for the villagers said: “We need to remind the decision-makers that we have not gone away and our concerns have not diminished over the months.
“Smaller turbines or a less sensitive location would probably have been acceptable. They are so close as to be very much “in your face” for those who live in the villages.”
Airvolution says the turbines would generate enough electricity to power about 4,600 homes every year for their 25-year lifetime. The company has also pledged to set up a community benefit fund, with at least £20,000 a year to be given to local causes.
After the public consultation period was extended by three months, the application is now expected to go before the council’s regulatory committee next month.
