Great Bentley: Campaigners fighting giant wind turbine bid

Blueprints have finally been submitted for a giant 110-metre tall wind turbine that would tower over England’s largest village green.
Renewable energy company RES wants to put up the High Barns wind turbine between Frating Abbey Farm Road and Plough Road in Great Bentley.
Bosses say the 1.5-megawatt turbine will produce enough electricity to power 1,000 homes.
The firm held a consultation with residents in March and plans have now been submitted to Tendring Council.
Villagers Richard Harvey, Roger Adams and Comer Mead, set up a special steering committee to look at possible impact on Great Bentley’s prized 43-acre village green.
Mr Mead said: “This will have a devastating impact on the village.
“This thing will be taller than Big Ben and will tower over the village green. The village has won best kept village awards many times and it beggars belief that someone thinks they can stick this monstrosity there.”
RES project manager Michelle Howley said the turbine would provide enough power for 1,000 local homes and plans will also include an annual £3,000 fund to benefit local community groups.
A planning report submitted as part of the application admits that wind energy developments tend to have a visually prominent effect on the landscape.
Tendring Council is expected to make a decision on the application by October 15.
