Wind turbine gets go-ahead from council

A wind turbine that will stand more than 100 metres high is to be built on land near to Bagworth Road in Newbold Heath.
Members of the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough council planning committee approved the controversial application during their monthly meeting.
Members of the public sat and watched councillors debate over the plans which included the erection of the turbine and an area of hardstanding around it to provide a stable base.
The turbine will generate up to 1.5mw of electricity.
Speaking at the meeting, objector Mr Auckland said he was concerned that the turbine would sit on land that had been heavily coal mined and “honeycombed”. He said: “This turbine will be three times the size of the Hinckley Hub.
“There have been no risk assessments. Underground there are many voids across the coal field.
“To locate a wind turbine on such extensively mined land is folly.”
He also said that drivers travelling along nearby roads could experience shadow flicker, which would be dangerous. Bagworth and Thornton Parish Council also objected to the application and raised concerns of possible subsidence triggered by the turbine weight.
Miss Rebecca Meek, the applicant, also spoke at the meeting. She said: “This application would help to support the community – we would use local contractors where possible and from the annual business rates which would be about £50,000 per anum.”
Councillor Christopher Boothby (Con, Ratby) said: “This is the biggest turbine we have ever had to face.
“It should be in a commercial site on the motorway. Not in a village in the countryside.
“It’s very dominant.”
