Campaigners hit back at expansion plan for Little Raith wind farm

Opponents in communities around Little Raith Wind Farm have reacted with ‘anger and disgust’ at plans to extend the site.

Last week the Press reported that a planning application seeking permission to add another six turbines to the wind farm, which already has nine operational, has been lodged with Fife Council by Kennedy Renewables.

The plans also include the creation of an education and visitor centre.

The firm said the warm welcome the wind farm has received since it began operating in 2012 was part of the reason for the expansion.

However James Glen, who runs the community website Loch of Shining Waters, said that an online poll had shown 83 per cent (307 votes) of people asked were against the extension to the wind farm, next to Mossmorran.

Mr Glen said: “Kennedy Renewables know from their community consultations that locals absolutely do not want any more industrial turbines near their communities.”

He said Little Raith was “a licence to rob consumers” claiming that between April 2013 and May 2014, the wind farm’s income exceeded £6 million, with over £3 million in subsidy.

He said: “From over £6 million annually, Kennedy Renewables have been “generously” giving £49k per annum back to us while we are forced to pay them over £3 million in subsidy via our leccy bills.”

Linda Holt, spokesman for national anti-wind farm campaign group Scotland Against Spin, said more and more “elaborate community benefit packages” are being offered by wind developers in advance of planning applications being decided.
