Parents voice concerns over ‘giant’ wind turbine

Parents in Llanaelhaearn have voiced their concerns about the effect a “giant” turbine proposed for their village could have on their children’s health.

Community group Antur Aelhaearn has submitted plans to build a 500kw wind turbine, measuring 67 metres in height, near Moelfre Bach in the village.

Plans were first presented in 2012 after it was granted a 40m wind turbine-measuring device in preparation for the application. A group of concerned residents recently held a meeting to voice their opposition.

Parents Dewi and Sioned Planwydd say they are concerned for the children of the area and the impact the tur-bine would have on them.

Mrs Planwydd said: “The village is in turmoil. It cer-tainly isn’t the village I was brought up in, and I find it very sad to see. Everyone used to be happy, playing in the fields, singing carols and sledging down the foel.

“Now the school is suffering. A number of children who live in the catchment area are attending different schools because of resentment within the village. It’s a shame the prospect of a tur-bine was ever considered for our community.

If this proposal is given the go-ahead, our children will be exposed to persistent sound, shadow flickering and a giant structure towering over them. We are worried about the long-term effects: sleep deprivation, development and education just to mention a few.

Will they develop wind turbine syndrome? I hope not.” Matt Hyland and his wife Ann also say they are fully against the application. Mr Hyland said: “The applicants have again erroneously stated that this turbine has full community support.

“The proposed turbine is destroying the sense of community in this village. Smiles, waves and neighbourly chat have been replaced with sour faces, cold shoulders and aggressive stances.”
