Wind farm proponent decries calls for road damage bond

A company proposing to build a 70-turbine wind farm in far north Queensland says it rejects calls to make it pay a bond to cover road damage.
The State Government is assessing RATCH Australia’s development application and public submissions closed earlier this month on the project’s draft environmental impact statement.
The Tablelands Regional Council wants assurances it will be compensated for any road damage during construction, with one councillor calling for a bond to protect the council should the developer run into financial strife.
However, RATCH Australia’s Geoff Dutton says it is unnecessary and the company will fix any damage.
“We expect to be treated basically as a major international player,” he said.
“We’re not dealing with someone who’s just building a house and has to put down a bond to make sure everything’s okay.
“Basically we’re saying our word’s good and it’s in the contract. It’s in our commitments with the Government.”
Mr Dutton says it is committed to road surveys before and after construction.
“On some of the major roads we don’t expect there to be any damage according to us because our vehicles won’t be any different to the B-double ratings that those roads have already got,” he said.
“But for minor roads we’ll certainly be looking at any damage that’s likely to be caused by us, first to the council and now of course to the Queensland Government.”
