Minnesota attorney shares wind farm experiences

A proposed wind farm in southern Lincoln County is creating a stir among property owners. People gathered at Canton High School to learn more about how the project would impact the area.
“As much of the best, most accurate and current information you could have, good, bad or otherwise so that everybody can make their own decision about this stuff,” attorney Dan Schleck said.
Minnesota attorney Dan Schleck has dealt with wind farm projects throughout the midwest and wanted to share situations he’s dealt with that could soon be coming to the county.
“When I first heard about it, I had mixed feelings. I wasn’t for it or against it. My thought was I needed to get information,” property owner Rafael Mendoza said.
Dakota Power Commnity Wind is pushing the project forward in Lincoln County, but some property owners are hoping to stall it as long as they can.
“It will take all of the members of the community to weigh in on where they feel so our county commission makes a good decision on our behalf,” Winnie Peterson said.
One of the biggest concerns that people wanted addressed involved property value and the potential for a decrease in value for properties with turbines and those nearby.
“View is important. Take a view away and the added value goes away. I don’t think that’s a big rocket science conclusion, that’s something everyone can think about,” Schleck said.
“I can see if they were trying to sell the property that potential for customers just turning away and saying no, we’re not going to handle that,” Mendoza said.
While nothing is set in stone with the project, these property owners are hoping to learn as much as they can before that possible time comes.
Along with Monday’s presentation to property owners, Schleck will be speaking with the Lincoln County Commissioners Tuesday morning about wind farms during their scheduled meeting.
