Inquiry for Glyndebourne turbine

A public inquiry is to be held into plans to build a 70m-high (230ft) wind turbine on the Sussex Downs to power Glyndebourne Opera House.

Communities and Local Government Secretary Hazel Blears has decided to “call in” the planning application.

Lewes District Council’s planning committed granted permission for the controversial turbine last month.

The council said on Friday it had not yet been advised of the dates and venue for the public inquiry.

Glyndebourne wants to build the turbine on land at Mill Plain, New Road, Ringmer.

It argues the 850kw turbine would generate the equivalent of the opera house’s annual electricity consumption.

But Ringmer Parish Council, the South Downs Society and Natural England all objected to the plan because of its impact on the area of outstanding natural beauty.

The council said members of the public would be able to submit written views to the government inspector running the inquiry or appear in person.
