Thorington wind turbine turned down

A proposal for a 300ft (90m) tall wind turbine in a Suffolk village has been rejected.

Stratus Environmental of Leeds wanted to build the wind-powered generator at Thorington near Halesworth.

Some residents objected, citing complaints about noise from people living near similar turbines at nearby Kessingland.

Suffolk Coastal District Council planning officers recommended it be built, but councillors turned it down.

District and county councillor Michael Gower (Conservative), who sat on the committee, said: “It’s been hanging over the local community, so to speak, for many months and I’m delighted for all of us that this application has been so resolutely rejected.

“There are parts of the UK where there are less people and more mountains to hide these machines, but in low-land and overcrowded parts of East Anglia they are visually intrusive.

“Hopefully, [the developers] will see the way the wind’s blowing and will accept the democratic decision.”

Stratus was not available to comment on the planning refusal.
