Almost 200 ramblers, cyclists and horse riders joined the walk, in a bid to show the strength of feeling against the Coronation Power scheme.

Campaigners were out in force on foot, bike and horseback in protest at plans to build 12 wind turbines at Rooley Moor.

Almost 200 ramblers, cyclists and horse riders joined the Rooley Moor protest walk, in a bid to show the strength of feeling against the scheme.

Graham Wright, Friends of Rooley Moor chairman, said 150 walkers and 30 horse riders joined the six-mile walk from Waterfoot on Sunday.

He said: “I hope it sends a strong message. I don’t know if Coronation Power would take notice but we hope it will have some impact on the councillors who will make the decision on the plans.

“I was really pleased with the turn out.

“We will now need to wait and see what happens when the plans are submitted. We are appealing for people to object to the plans when they come out.”

The Friends of Rooley Moor say the scheme could ‘devastate’ the area, in particular the historic Rooley Moor Road, which was built during the Lancashire cotton famine in the 1860s.

Rooley Moor is also part of the Pennine Bridleway, the Mary Townley Loop, and is regularly used by Rossendale Harriers for training and events.

In March, Coronation Power announced plans to cut the number of turbines from 17 to 12.

Bosses said the changes would reduce the visual impact and increase the distance from houses.

Coronation Power said they plan to submit plans for the reduced scheme to Rossendale and Rochdale councils in June.

Almost 400 people have joined the ‘Friends of Rooley Moor Road’ group on Facebook.
